If you go to a new place for the first time, there is always things you want to see.  Try to plan them in your schedule and make reservation an advance.  That will give you more time to explore the city without pressure. Specially if you book skip-the-line tickets.
​Pre-booking your tour also gets priority treatment when it comes to boarding times, and you don't have to arrive hours earlier to secure your ticket. There may be two entrances in operation – one to buy tickets and another where you have pre-bought and can just walk straight through.

But the best way to get a little idea of the city you are visiting is to take a city sightseeing tour as soon as possible after your arrival. Then you get a picture of where everything is, and it can be easier to explore the city on your own afterwards

Excursion

A good way to explore the surroundings is to go on a guided excursion.
There are day trips and excursions with an overnight stay.
If you choose the latter, you should plan the excursion before you go, so you don't have to pay for double hotel nights.
