The biggest trotting competitions in the world
The biggest countries in trotting are France, Sweden and the USA. Also in other Nordic countries big races are held annually, such as the Oslo Grand Prix in Norway and the Copenhagen Cup in Denmark. In countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, competitions are held every week. In France the Grand Prix d'Amérique and in the USA the Hambletonian Stakes.
Grand Prix d'Amérique
This race for slightly older horses takes place annually in France, on the Vincennes circuit in Paris, and had its first race in 1920. It is considered the world's largest long-distance race and is among the world's most prestigious. The race originated Last lap to pay tribute to the American effort during the First World War, hence the name. Previously it was only called Prix d'Amérique but in 2013 "Grand" was added. The course is 2700 meters long. The first Swedish winner of this race was Sören Nordin with his horse Scotch Fez.
Hambletonian Stakes
This American race is seen as the world's most prestigious race for three-year-old warmblood horses. The race is run at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey and premiered in 1926. The name comes from the horse Hambeltonian 10, from which all American trotting lines today are descended. This race is 1,609 meters long and is part of the American trotting Triple Crown with two other races – the Kentucky Futurity and the Yonkers Trot. If a horse wins all of these races in its three-year-old season, it takes a Triple Crown. Eight trotters have since the start of this event succeeded in doing so. The first Swedish winner of the Hambletonian Stakes was Stefan Melander with the horse Scarlet Knight, who became the first foreign horse to win the race.

In Denmark, the Copenhagen Cup race is run with varying distances, but since 1978 always over 2011 meters. Finally, Finland has a race called Finlandia-Ajo, which is 1609 meters long - just like the Hambletonian Stakes.
